More Fords To Become Turbocharged
A recent trend amongst Ford buyers is a desire for turbocharged engines. The turbocharged engine has become so popular that Ford is planning on expanding the number of Ford models that offer the turbocharged engine.
With this expansion on turbocharged engines, Ford announced recently that will invest $145 million to upgrade its Cleveland Engine Plant in order to build the next generation of engines. The Cleveland Engine Plant will be developing a 3.5 liter EcoBoost turbocharged engine into an expanded line of cars and trucks in the Ford lineup.
Originally debuting in 2009, Ford’s EcoBoost engines have proven to not only be reliable, but extremely popular amongst consumers. This is especially interesting, as the EcoBoost engines cost more than Ford’s regular gasoline engines. These EcoBoost engines have been designed by Ford to deliver the same capability as larger-displacement engines but with better fuel economy. Certainly with the uptick in gas, you can see consumers are more interested in spending money on the lot versus spending money at the pump.
“This second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine is another great example of Ford continuously improving and innovating to give these hardworking customers the best engines and trucks we can," Joe Hinrichs, Ford's president of the Americas, said in a statement.
The F-150 Raptor is expected to have a special version of this next generation EcoBoost engine. The Raptor is a specialized version of the F-150 that is known for being able to rip through off-road trails like a hot knife through butter. The Raptor’s new special EcoBoost engine is expected to begin development this summer.
“The team at Cleveland Engine is thrilled to begin building one of the most technologically advanced engines ever designed for the all-new F-150 Raptor," UAW Vice President Jimmy Settles said in a statement.
Currently, Ford employs right around 1,500 people at the Cleveland Engine Plant. The Cleveland Engine Plant has already produced more than 1 million EcoBoost engines to date.
The current EcoBoost engine that is produced at the Cleveland Engine Plant is an optional engine upgrade for the 2016 Ford F-150, 2016 Ford Explorer, 2016 Ford Expedition, 2016 Ford Transit, 2016 Ford Flex and the 2016 Ford Taurus.
