Ford Fusion Success Could Scare Toyota

The success of the Ford Fusion has been critical in proving Ford, as an automaker, can design and produce a successful passenger car.  The Fusion has been a success on many different levels.  In terms of sales, the Fusion was the 12th best-selling vehicle in the United States last year.  And it was the 6th best-selling passenger car.

So what’s in store for the Fusion for the 2017 model?  For one thing, Ford is looking to refresh the Fusion.  With competition heating up in the mid-size sedan segment, automakers can no longer do just the bare essential to get by, otherwise they risk falling behind.  Consider what Nissan had to say on the matter.
"We invested three to four times more than we typically would invest" in a mid-cycle update for the two cars," says Pierre Loing, Nissan product-strategy chief, according to Automotive News. "The competition is getting stronger."

Many expect the 2017 Fusion to be more than just a refresh.  In fact, many expect there will be a major upgrade.  And those same experts believe Ford will hit another home run with it.

The Fusion comes in a sister model called the Fusion V6 Sport.  On the outside, they look mostly the same.  But under the hood, you will find the V6 Sport has a twin turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine. It's a very powerful performance sedan that stands out in a very competitive mid-size segment.

The Fusion Sport gets an estimated 325 horsepower and 350-lb.-ft of torque, and is all-wheel drive. Further, the Fusion Sport is projected to generate roughly 50 more horsepower than the 3.5-liter Toyota Camry and Honda Accord -- two of the Fusion's top competitors -- according to Ford.

The 2017 Fusion will also feature a brand new Platinum trim.  The Platinum trim answers the previous Titanium trim that sold very well for Ford.  Ford believes this new Platinum trim will help close the gap between the standard sedan and a luxury sedan, without breaking the bank.

The Fusion Platinum will be available with a 2.0-liter EcoBoost, as well as all-wheel drive, and the interior boasts of a hand-wrapped Venetian-leather steering wheel, a unique grille finished in Magnetic paint, and 19-inch polished wheels, among other features.

In the latter part of the mid 2000’s Fusion began to steal market share from sedan champion, Toyota and their Camry.  The Fusion put pressure on Toyota to step up their game.  Toyota responded in 2011 and redesigned the Camry.  Sales would rebound, but it was at the expense of other competitors, rather than the Fusion.

The 2017 Ford Fusion won’t have any extreme changes to the exterior.  If it ain’t broke…why fix it?  Ford investors should be very optimistic of Ford and their surge to the top end of the mid-size sedan market.
