2016 Ford Focus RS

The 2016 Ford Focus RS is the 30th car to wear the esteemed RS badge.  Speedy hatchbacks seem to be in vogue these days.  Automakers all around are looking to put their stamp on this market.  And Ford is no different.

The 2016 Ford Focus RS, on the surface, will look much like its competitors.  You get a four cylinder, four wheel drive turbo that is very comparable to the Audi RS3 or Mercedes A45 AMG.  But taking a closer look at the Focus RS, will reveal the Focus RS has a lot more to offer.  Technology will separate the Focus RS from its competitors.

Under the hood, you will find the Focus RS' 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine to produce about 315 hp (235 kW) and 475 Nm. The engine is originally from the Mustang EcoBoost, but engineers have cranked the boost pressure up from 18 psi to 23.1 psi for the RS.

The turbocharger is an all-new low-inertia, twin-scroll unit with a bigger compressor wheel that feeds more airflow to the engine and, consequently, more power throughout the rev range.  In order to assist in the extra power the Focus RS is generating, Ford's engineers have fitted the car with a bigger intercooler that maximizes charge density, while the engine breathes more freely through a low-restriction intake manifold.

Ford engineers have designed the Focus RS’ motor to be more durable, over its lifetime.  The cylinder liners are made of high-tensile cast iron and the EcoBoost motor's head gasket has been upgraded to deal with the extra heat it produces under heavy load. These type of upgrades put the Focus RS right in line with the five cylinder Audi RS3 and Mercedes A45AMG when it comes to power.

The previous Focus RS used RevoKnuckle front wheel drive system.  The 2016 version will be an all-wheel drive system.  Ford has created a torque vectoring system that manages power forwards, backwards and side to side on each axle.  What really makes this special is that the electronic brain inside the Focus RS’ all-wheel drive system can make calculations 100 times per second.

In order to suit the driving situation, the system will continually make adjustments to the torque distribution.  It uses two electronically controlled clutch packs on each side of the rear drive unit to send up to 70 percent of the engine's power to the back wheels.

In order to help curb understeer, Ford’s new system is able to shuffle power between front and rear axles.  It will be able to send 100% of the power of the rear axle to an individual wheel, which can be used to rotate the car on corner entry.

Ford promises the car’s all-wheel drive system will allow drivers to achieve over 1 g in corners.  If that isn’t enough, when the car is in Drift Mode, the RS’ systems are designed to help drivers go sideways.  Of course, if you aren’t starring in The Fast And The Furious, you may want to consider time and place for using this.

The 2016 Focus RS is fitted with 13.78-inch ventilated front discs.  The previous version had 13.23 inch discs on it.  The bigger discs will be clamped on by aluminum Brembo four-piston monobloc calipers finished in a special shade of RS Blue.

The brakes will be cooled by specific ducts in the front fascia.  There will be twin vents in the underbody with special airflow guidelines in the suspension area.
Ford has spared no technological upgrade when it comes to the Ford Focus RS.  The RS is a true badge of honor.

The 2016 Ford Focus RS should be hitting dealerships in the U.S. by Spring of 2016.
